What Anger Says About You - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career You would be surprised if you could ask your anger what it really means. If anger were sitting next to you when you got cut off on the road, what would it say? If anger were on a conference call with you when you tried to cancel your cable service, what would its message be? If anger were online with you as you tried to enter or exit a site that just wouldn’t cooperate, what would it really mean? Anger means: “You feel powerless.” You feel that you have no “juice,” no sway, and no ability to change the situation. Consider how marginally true that is. How rare it is that you literally can do nothing. What anger says is that you don’t fully understand your choices. That something is unexpected or continually perplexing, and you don’t have a repertoire of responses ready. That’s all. You are never really powerless. You always have options. But anger is what I call a “weaponized” emotion. It’s ballistic. Like fear, worry, self-doubt and even boredom, anger destroys your clarity. These emotions put an embargo on your access to your personal intelligence. That is, you can’t call on your inner wisdom, self-acceptance and clear-eyed-optimism. It’s like those key qualities of a self-fulfilling life have been blown up, like a bridge that’s been wired with explosives. It’s a bridge that takes you from where you are to where you want to be. And, anger blows up the central, connecting pathway. That’s why anger is actually a great signal to laser focus on what you want. And, make the decision to avoid a death match with the source. Behavior-Based Interviewing (Part 2) The primary difference between traditional and behavioral based interviewing is that traditional interviewing asks generalized questions such as, “What motivates you to put forth your greatest effort?” while  Behavior-Based Interviewing (BBI) asks for specific examples from the recent past, such as: Give me an example of a time recently when you needed to adjust quickly to new information. What did you do and how did it turn out? BBI works like this:   the interviewer develops questions about the kinds of incidents and interactions that occur commonly on the job.   For an administrative position, for example, the questions may involve managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, or answering difficult inquiries over the phone.   The interviewer will ask you to describe brief scenarios about how you used special skills or solved problems, each illustrating a specific activity or task required by the job. Each story should explain the problem, a set of actions and the results in quantifiable terms.   This model is called the S.T.A.R. model (Situation, Taking Action, and Results.) The interviewers are trained to ask follow-on questions that continue to reveal parts of the story until you accomplish the entire S.T.A.R. model.   BBI interviewers are looking for specific skills: Content Skills Knowledge that is work specific such as using computer applications, accounting etc.  Functional or Transferable Skills Used with people, information or things such as organizing, managing, developing, communicating, etc. expressed as verbs.  Self-Management Skills personal characteristics such as dependable, team player, self directed, punctual, etc. BBI offers a greater opportunity for interviewers to gain more insight into real life abilities and experience of candidates.   But there are challenges involved.   Interviewers and candidates must get used to new kinds of questions, and to feel comfortable in pursuing follow up questions until the entire S.T.A.R. model is achieved.   This can sometimes lead to awkward interviews, especially if the candidates have trouble remembering an appropriate past incident or in articulating results.   The BBI technique sometimes appears to favor candidates who are articulate, and have a penchant for clear thinking and telling a good story. A good BBI interviewer will sometimes tell short stories themselves as a way of prompting the candidate.   “I remember the first job I had.   I had three bosses, all with very different personalities.   One week, we were getting ready for the annual sales meeting…”   Most candidates will be able to follow the S.T.A.R. pattern more easily after hearing an example. An unusual aspect of behavioral interviewing is that the questions often turn to a negative subject, such as “a time when you dealt with a difficult customer,” or “a time when you disagreed with your boss about an important issue.”   This makes for a more interesting and revealing interview (we presume everyone can perform well under ideal conditions; we’re more interested in how they perform under pressure) but it can make any candidate uncomfortable, since all job seeking advice is adamantly against addressing negative topics in an interview.   You hope that your interviewer will include at least one positive, “tell me about a time when you succeeded” scenario.  Here are some tips for preparing for the BBI interview: Think about the worst question you can face in an interviewâ€"the one you most dread, and practice answering that. If you can answer it, the rest will be much easier. Once you’ve crossed that hurdle, you can practice for the rest of the interview. Be prepared to articulate your strengths and skills and what you can bring to the organization.   Stay focused on what you can do for the company. Practice a mock interview with a career counselor, family member, or friendâ€"or in front of the mirror. Don’t forget to work on framing your answers in the S.T.A.R. model (describe the Situation, explain how you Took Action, and the Results you accomplished.) Why Bad Resumes Are Like Holiday Fruitcakes - Pathfinder Careers Why Bad Resumes Are Like Holiday Fruitcakes The other day, I was participating in a Twitter chat when someone complained about getting not just one, but FIVE fruitcakes this holiday season. And since December is just getting cranked up, this lucky fellow could potentially end up with a whole herd of fruitcakes crowding out the gifts under his Christmas tree. Instead of pondering big questions like, How did this whole awful fruitcake thing get started in the first place?, I started thinking about why we hate them so much and oddly, how they compare so nicely to a real stinker of a resume. So with that in mind, I give you this: 1. Bad resumes are like holiday fruitcakes because they get thrown away.  All. The. Time.  A really awful resume is something no employer wants. They cant do anything with it, so the fruitcake and resume both get tossed and end up sitting in the garbage together, getting to know each other. 2. Bad resumes are like holiday fruitcakes because there are just too darned many ingredients that dont fit well.  Nuts, fruits, sugar, and a whole other assortment of other items dont necessarily fit well together, and neither do a whole bunch of random elements in a resume. You have to have the right recipe that tickles the taste buds and has a flavor.  And more importantly, entices someone to want more. Having a mash up of leftover baking ingredients from last years cookie baking party isnt the answer and neither is a wild journey into your resume.  Make sure everything fits well. 3. Bad resumes are like holiday fruitcakes because no one will tell you how awful they are, especially after you give them one.  You know the drill: a guest arrives at your holiday party and hands you a wrapped, squishy package and you already know what it is, with a sinking feeling.  But you nod, say thank you brightly, and then slink into the kitchen to feed it to the dog before anyone notices.  You would never tell the guest how much you hate fruitcake, but you appreciate the gesture. The same thing goes when an employer gets a bad resume; they nod, say thank you, then as soon as you are out of sight, they are feeding it to the shredder. 4. Bad resumes are like holiday fruitcakes because they are like bricks.  Solid and yes, even durable, fruitcake is a dense object. And so too, resumes that are especially sucky will land with a thud. These clunkers are unwieldy and if they dont hit the mark, end up falling flat. So please make sure your resume  is usable and not a dead weight, so it doesnt up as someones door stop. 5. Bad resumes are like holiday fruitcakes because they often seem like a last resort.  Stumped on what to bring someone for a holiday gift?  Heard about how much people hate fruitcake? Yet you still hand one off as a present? Bad resumes are like fruitcake gifts because that means they are last-minute easy grabs at the grocery store that come usually wrapped pretty. But that doesnt cover for the unpalatable contents.  Your lack of preparation in getting a resume done should not come off like an afterthought at the 11th hour. Plan ahead, do it right, and you wont regret it. Think about how you might avoid some of these disasters in 2013, and maybe, just maybe, youll come up with the right mixture to make both your resume and a fruitcake delightful and enjoyable.
